SAMAARI THREW HER CUP across the mahogany dining table and stabbed the wood with her knife. A Cerberi walked into the room uninvited and swung open the doors to the dining hall.

“Why do you interrupt my meal, Orbina? This better be news about my sister,” Samaari said in frustration.

“Apologies, my queen,” Orbina said confidently. “But unfortunately not. Idira is still with the others searching for her.”

“Then why are you here?” Samaari asked, trying to eat, although she never could if she was being watched.

“I bring news from The Border.”

Samaari lifted her head and pointed her ear in Orbina’s direction. Her ear twitched, and her lips parted slightly as she rested her elbows on the table and her knuckles beneath her chin.

“Speak,” she said.

“We have found a box.”

“A box.” Samaari said, laughing.

“With the royal engraving,” Orbina continued. “It was found in a building at the edge of the city.”

“Show me this box, I want to see it.”

“My queen, we have it safe in The Border. We can’t be sure of its contents.”

Samaari rose slowly from her chair, her sharp nose twitched once.

“You will go back to The Border, and you will bring me this box.”

“Yes, my queen,” Orbina responded, quivering. “But it might be a while, the masquerade is in a few days and the box has the royal engraving, so it will be the centrepiece of the event.”

Samaari blew out three candles, one at a time, on the table as she walked across the room. She lifted a fourth and held it in front of Orbina.

“Bring me the box,” she demanded, before blowing the candle smoke into Orbina’s face.
